Autumn is a period of transition and change; it can be viewed as an in-between from life (summer) and death (winter).

“The Fall of the House of Usher” inhabits a state of catatonic decomposition on a downhill transformation from life to death, and the narrator/main character enters the story in its final stages unwillingly partaking in Usher’s final moments.

Transcendental philosophy is at the very center of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.” This short story flows with rich details and dark overtones inviting the reader into a nightmare of death and transformation.

From the opening line, Poe sets a transformational tone by setting the story in “the autumn of the year” (Poe 99).

Emerson retains the hierarchal meaning of transcendence in his higher uses of nature, but he also argues for the beauty and value of the common” (19).

Poe went further in his views and removed himself from the classical structures of transcendence, which normally moved upwards, and moved his transcendence downwards.Though both the house and Roderick Usher are things people would typically stay away from, the narrator seems to be intrigued by the whole situation.Throughout the passage he speaks of the wretched conditions and utterly dismal appearance of the house.Characters and Setting in The Fall of the House of Usher The primary objective in “The Fall of the House of Usher” is to give the reader a sense of horror.Through the creation of elaborate imagery and dreary circumstances Poe conveys a story that elicits in the reader the dark feelings he has hoped for.His take on horror comes from the very nature of this ancient house/family and its current standing. The house is not maintained, the landscape is in disrepair, and there is a fissure threatening the very foundation of this once regal manor.Although the narrator should be full of warm emotions by a visit to a childhood friend, the opposite is quite true. These menacing feelings, on the narrator’s part, moves the reader down the path of destructive transcendence and away from the classical upward transcendence.Poe’s use of destructive transcendence takes the conventional upward physical/spiritual transcendence and inverses it downwards, defining a transformation from human or flesh to the ultimate godhead or original unity through decay and destruction. It becomes increasingly clear that the religious views of the universe espoused by the major religions were flawed.Due to the industrial revolution and scientific growth during the age of reason, a group of writers and philosophers came together in a movement called “Transcendentalism”, which believed in the unity of all things (“Transcendentalism”).
