Georgetown University Undergraduate Admissions Essays

Submitting standardized test scores to GW is optional.We are looking for students who have the academic preparation, personal qualities, and motivation to thrive in GW’s dynamic environment.

First-year applicants can select primary and alternate schools before they submit their application. We do not allow students to alter their school list once it has been submitted.

Current GW students may be able to transfer into another school after their first year, although rules vary by program.

In addition, Georgetown’s location–just 1.5 miles from downtown DC–provides students with endless possibilities to explore a number of historical sites and museums, including the Smithsonian, which is just a short walk or subway ride away from campus.

With an acceptance rate of 20% and 94% of all first-year students graduating in the top 10% of their high school class, Georgetown is considered a highly selective university.

In line with the Jesuit academic ideals, Georgetown’s educational approach focuses on the creation of a well-rounded individual who is exposed to a wide array of subjects, cultures and ideas.Only students who intend to earn a BFA in fine arts, fine art photography, photojournalism or graphic design within the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design must submit a portfolio (12 to 20 completed pieces).When applying to GW via the Common Application, if you select Corcoran as your primary or alternate school choice, you will receive information on how to submit your portfolio via Slideroom.Overall, it is important that a prospective student carefully review all application requirements and important deadlines.An applicant should be sure to use the Georgetown admissions application to express him or herself well and to explain why he or she believes themselves to be a good fit for the university.Because we take a holistic approach to the application review process, we have no minimum GPA or SAT/ACT requirements for admission.However, admission to GW is competitive and admitted students are typically strong academic students in their high school graduating class.Students selecting a primary and an alternate choice must fulfill all admission requirements for both schools, if they are different.For example, if the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design is your primary or alternate choice, you would be required to submit a portfolio.Applicants can find their GWID under their name in the GW Undergraduate Student Portal.If you have not received your GWID a week after receiving your portal invite, please reach out to our office at with your first name, last name, and date of birth.
